Gaimen Kirikae Written Test: 50-Question Study Guide

The old 10-question conversion quiz has been replaced by a substantially harder knowledge check. Here is what to study and how to prepare efficiently.

Quick answerFor conversion applications handled under the revised rules, the knowledge check contains 50 questions and requires at least 45 correct answers. The change took effect on October 1, 2025. Study Japanese road rules in detail rather than relying on the old “common sense” 10-question test.

A 90% pass requirement leaves very little room for careless mistakes. Similar-looking statements often turn on words such as “always,” “immediately,” “within,” “before,” or “only.”

What to study

  • Traffic lights, police hand signals and lane arrows.
  • Pedestrian and bicycle-crossing priority.
  • Railway crossings and stop requirements.
  • Speed limits and safe speed for conditions.
  • Parking, stopping and no-stopping zones.
  • Overtaking, passing and lane changes.
  • Intersections, right turns and Japan's two-step moped turn.
  • Emergency vehicles, school buses and streetcars.
  • Seat belts, mobile phones, alcohol and fatigue.
  • Licence classes, novice marks and basic vehicle safety.

A practical seven-day study plan

  1. Day 1: Take a 50-question diagnostic test without checking answers.
  2. Day 2: Study signs, signals, road markings and police hand signals.
  3. Day 3: Study pedestrians, bicycles, railway crossings and school zones.
  4. Day 4: Study intersections, lane position, turning and overtaking.
  5. Day 5: Study stopping, parking, speed and licence rules.
  6. Day 6: Review every wrong answer and write the exact rule in one sentence.
  7. Day 7: Complete at least two timed tests and aim for 48–50, not merely 45.

How to handle tricky wording

Read the entire statement before deciding. Test writers often combine a correct first clause with an incorrect second clause. Pay special attention to:

  • Absolute words: “always,” “never,” “regardless,” and “under all circumstances.”
  • Distances and timing: 3 seconds, 30 metres, 5 metres and 10 metres.
  • Different actions: overtaking versus passing; parking versus stopping.
  • Vehicle classes: rules for mopeds, motorcycles and regular vehicles are not interchangeable.
  • Safety duties: a green light does not remove the duty to avoid blocking an intersection or endangering pedestrians.

Use practice tests correctly

Our free practice area contains 610 multilingual True/False questions, including five Learner's Permit sets and four Final Exam sets. The bank is broader than the 50-question conversion check and is useful for building a deeper understanding of Japanese rules.

Do not memorise only the answer letter. Read the explanation and identify the specific word that makes a false statement false.
